Romain Grosjean escaped from one of the scariest F1 crashes in recent memory in the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, when his Haas car pierced the barriers and split in half as it caught fire after a 137mph impact. In this video we explain what we know about the crash, how Grosjean climbed out of the wreckage, and the key factors that enabled him to survive an accident that surely would have resulted in a fatality just a few years ago

Very lucky he had that halo or his head woulda been it that fire.. Licky, extremely lucky. Thanks god it was nothing more

      oh shit

    3. Donna Merquis

      omg is he ok...

    4. G Bredbenner

What a bunch of hooey. Put some decent mirrors on these cars! What a bonehead move to veer across the track like RG did. Perhaps if had been able to see his rival coming, he would not have tried such a move. Not to mention on lap 1? Cars laden with fuel - RG should be banned from the "sport". He screwed up.

    5. minij hooi

I’m glad he wasn’t knocked out, and got the hell out. A camera across the track caught everything

    6. fouoii gyhh

      Oh, you look cool though.

He nearly became romain goujon! Ironic as the last crash in f1 resulting in a fire was gerhard berger🍔

As someone who just started watching f1 a few months ago. My heart skipped a bit after seeing the crash. Happy that he is ok🙏🏽.

      1. Ptao Tom

I really sthought he was dead. when there was no sight of him under that flames I was super worried. look at just how little room there was to escape

    11. Matthew Creamer

Very good work that they have done to keep the drivers as safe as possible. Would like them to adopt the safer barrier that NASCAR USES ON all tracks they race on. I understand that some tracks in F1 can't install that type of barrier due to the track also being part of a public roadway, but I think it should still be considered at least for the most dangerous parts of those tracks.

      1. Joanna

        surely that has to go.

That he survived a crash like this and is almost unharmed is unbelievable. He would have died if F1 was still like when I was a kid.

seriously injured, or dead. Halo would have made it significantly more difficult for rescuers to extract him. As it was, it certainly delayed his extraction.

      1. Jon Ritchie

@Joanna definitely 👍. He's very lucky. If he'd broken a leg or was stuck he'd would not of be able to get out of the car that had saved his life but was on fire!

      2. Joanna

lost his life or his legs. it's not ideal for it to give way and rip the car in half obviously, but just be happy it wasn't concrete.

I really sthought he was dead. when there was no sight of him under that flames I was super worried. look at just how little room there was to escape

    26. Ben Bryan

140ish mph straight into a wall, car sliced in half, engulfed in flames, driver gets out and walks away. 30 years ago that would have been fatal. There's no doubt in my mind of that. Amazing cars with phenomenal safety systems.

      1. niduoe stre

        You're so beautiful! Great video?

    27. Randy Swiger

    28. Reinhold Everest

That first Marshall with the fire extinguisher was scared to approach the car and uselessly sprayed the asphalt outside the flame area. The Armco barrier could have killed him, surely that has to go.

      1. zijuiy wttuy

If the barr was more solid like you suggested on this vid than he probably lost his life.

    29. forevertheuni

the reason he survived is because the energy was dissipated by the split, plus the bending of the barrier. A unbreakable barrier + non-splitting car, he would probably would have died or lost consciousness and then burned very badly.

    30. K W

Christmas miracle came early this year. Hope to see him get back to racing soon.

    31. strungoutkid

At 1:55 does anyone else see the devil in the fire?

    32. Robin Fleet

I'd suggest that the damage to the lithium battery pack is what ignited the fuel leaked from the damaged fuel cell. As soon as the air contacted the exposed lithium it would have burst into flames.

    33. Andrew Thompson

My concern when the Halo system first came in was that it would delay a driver getting out of the vehicle in an emergency, or possibly even prevent him being able to get out. Looking at the footage in detail and listening to Grosjean's own recounting of the incident this was indeed the case. His position, with the underside of the car appearing to have penetrated the barrier first would suggest that HALO had less beneficial effect than has been suggested. The HALO system would need to be examined to see exactly what damage it has but my concerns about HALO remain. Had he been unable to extract himself, as was very nearly the case, he would almost certainly have been significantly more seriously injured, or dead. Halo would have made it significantly more difficult for rescuers to extract him. As it was, it certainly delayed his extraction.

a huge car traveling at very high speeds hit the barrier, that's why it failed. it's probably for the best that it failed, if that was thick concrete we might be talking about a driver who lost his life or his legs. it's not ideal for it to give way and rip the car in half obviously, but just be happy it wasn't concrete.

the marshal did was keep him from falling down after jumping off the barrier, which would not have been a big deal.

amazing response by the track marshals and doctors in no way should that barrier be at that angle on a straight and cudos to senna for making safety a priority may he rest in peace

    47. leaf16nut

3:57 The barrier should overlap itself or be one solid guard rail system, you can see three separate metal rails which the car can get stuck between, kind of a dumb design in my opinion.

    48. DGDY GRTVZGTH

The barrier was too strong which is a paradox, if the barrier was less stronger the car would not brake in half

are we supposed to ignore the fact that it was his pathetic driving that put him in this position ??

    56. Jack fosh

Grosjean is a danger for Formula 1. His reckless driving has endangered other drivers over the past 7 years.

      1. butti fdft

Glad the halo wasn’t an obstacle for him to get out of the car.

    57. Carbon Crank

Grosjean did NOT need any help getting over the barrier. He got HIMSELF out of the car and the marshalls played ZERO role in his survival. He is his OWN hero. The only thing the marshal did was keep him from falling down after jumping off the barrier, which would not have been a big deal.

      1. Carbon Crank

@butti fdft That is the biggest issue and nobody is talking about it. There had to be a better way to create these entrances. That would have been a glancing blow had not the wall narrowed the track by 20 or more degrees. And then there's the issue of what the hell is an armco doing there. What is the standard for allowing armco's to be used where or even is there a standard. If someone can't afford to build a race track f1 shouldn't be racing there.

      2. butti fdft

The wall appeared to be at almost a right angle to the track where the incident occurred. Why? Did the “flap” covering the emergency entrance have to extend out so as it did?

    58. Juan Van Steyvoort

That's what I call :"Analysis" !.... Congratulations to the authors of this remarkable video. :-) From Brussels, with Love...

This crash is fucking horrifying i was watching this live thinking his Family & millions of F1 fans have just watched this man die😓, i was so happy when he emerged out of that ball of fire well done Romain & the medics team🙏🏽

    60. Mike Walker

but....the halo almost caused him not to be able to get out

    61. zenchii

Is it weird that I am suddenly a grojean fanboy?

    62. daniel_960_

I mean it’s good that the barrier got penetrated, otherwise the impact would be much harder.

      Dallara

    64. raty rat

There’s no way he got out of that seat on his own , angels were sent to pull him out , look at the halo it’s trapped between the barriers .

    65. iamhole

blind luck saved him, look at where the cockpit came to rest, another 6 inches rotated and the halo and barrier would have stopped him getting out

    66. vir.root

He's lucky, the barrier or railings didn't cut his head-off🤔

    67. nijuo joing

The sad death of Jules Bianchi saved the life of Romain Grosjean today. Get well soon Romain. RIP Jules. 🌹

and definitely saved Grosjean's life. I have been watching F1 for over 30 years and have never seen anything like that. Scariest F1 crash ever that was not fatal.

    71. Tyler Gay

Can someone please explain how the hell he got out... from the photos it looks like the halo hole is partially covered by the barrier... extremely happy that he got out but I am lost to how

    74. RSA MAN

kind of comical that he survived this

    75. Ridho SS

If only the monocoque not getting into the barrier that deep and leaving equal escape gap within the halo, Grosjean won’t be able to get out. It’s amazing to see this.

    79. Mill Eudic

Me thinks the barriers worked. Imagine slamming in without them giving in.

    80. jior6

    84. Richard Zink

Saw it live I thought he was gone

    85. nickelpython357

The FIA should adopt the windscreen into the HALO system like Indycar uses to prevent smaller objects from entering the cockpit. It would not change the look of it but would go a long way toward keeping smaller objects out of the drivers face. I was among those that disliked the HALO system at first but this and other incidents proves how well it works and definitely saved Grosjean's life. I have been watching F1 for over 30 years and have never seen anything like that. Scariest F1 crash ever that was not fatal.

    86. Snow White

We came so far from what Niki Lauda suffered during that fateful day in Nurburgring.

    87. Ariel Diaz

Marshal with portable fire extinguisher made no difference at all. Those are useless in a self feeding fire like that one. Plus he was scared and too far away from the fire. Monocoque integrity, halo and fire resistant suit saved Romain`s life in that order.

      1. butti fdft

just for psychological reasons that entrance should be changed or move down further.

    88. Boxersteavee

THE CAR SPLITTING IN HALF IS A SAFETY FEATURE! IT IS MEANT TO TAKE SOME OF THE ENERGY OUT OF IT HITTING THE BARRIER!

It designed to break in half. A key point you missed. Check WTF1 on HUfast 🧐

    91. Raptorman0909

Without the Halo there is zero doubt that Grosjean would not be with us now and the manor of his demise would have been horrific -- thanks to the Halo that didn't happen. The FIA is going to have to look into how to better prevent the fuel cell from rupturing the way it did because if Romain had been slowed by maybe just another 30 seconds the outcome could have been far worse.

    92. AniqRTH

this is it Chief.. we achieved HALO

    93. misuyy fong

medical car I was so happy. So glad the saftey is there and saved his life today. Don't think there should be any controversy behind safety now.

    95. Mike Mcmanamay

Glad he is okay. Prayers with him get back in the seat soon. Formula 1 should have had this figured out long time ago. Is there points where you can hit raw barrier at 140 mph this is what you have. F1 get it fixed

    96. Andrew Moseley

:09 His car did WHAT to the barrier? Pissed it?

      1. misuyy fong

Fire extinguishers stations around the perimeter or Safety volunteers on standby?

    97. weemissile

That's why you don't place an ARMCO at angle like that, at one of the fastest parts of the track. Literally anything else would have been than ARMCO in this situation. Solid concrete would have been better.

    98. Junior Mints

The key factor in this crash is that Grosjean is a crap driver.
